[EN]Hydraulic cylinder price · how it is set

Hydraulic cylinder cost: worked out, not looked up.

A custom hydraulic cylinder has no list price: the price is built up from bore, stroke, pressure, construction and quantity. Below: the eight price factors, the effect of quantity, the real cost of a cheap cylinder, and what to send for a firm quotation within 48 hours.

[01]Eight factors

Eight decisions that set the price.

01
Bore and stroke
Bore sets material mass and machining time; stroke sets tube and rod length and, on long strokes, the rod diameter required by the buckling calculation. These two move the price most.
02
Working pressure
At 350–400 bar rather than 160 bar, tube wall thickness, flange and weld design, seal type and back-up rings all change. Test and verification costs rise too.
03
Construction type
Tie-rod (ISO 6020-2) is usually the most economical; round-flange (ISO 6022) suits heavy duty; welded and mill-type are built to drawing. Mounting style (flange, clevis, trunnion, foot) and port position affect labour.
04
Material and coating
European honed tube and hard-chrome-plated rod are standard. Induction-hardened chrome, nickel-chrome duplex or HVOF tungsten-carbide coating, and marine protection, raise the price.
05
Sealing and environment
Temperature, speed and fluid (mineral oil, HFC water-glycol, biodegradable oil) decide seal material and profile. Kastaş, Trelleborg and European brands are standard; special compounds such as FKM and PTFE cost more.
06
Sensors and cushioning
Integrated position sensing (magnetostrictive), inductive end-of-stroke sensors, adjustable cushioning, servo duty and, on request, SIL2-capable variants add engineering and assembly cost.
07
Quantity and repeats
For a one-off, design, CNC programming and set-up costs all fall on one unit. On series and repeat orders they are spread across the batch, material is planned in bulk and unit cost falls noticeably.
08
Documents and lead time
Beyond the standard test report, 3.1 material certificates (EN 10204), NDT reports, special test protocols and special delivery dates add cost; each is stated in the quotation.

[02]Cheap cylinder, real cost

The most expensive cylinder is the one that stops the machine.

Two quotations with the same dimensions can describe different products. Ask about tube and rod origin, seal brand, welding standard and, above all, whether the cylinder was tested before dispatch. An untested cylinder has its first pressure test on your machine; an oil leak, a scored rod and downtime usually cost far more than the price gap.

Soydan cylinders use European tube and rod, seals from Kastaş, Trelleborg and European brands, and welding certified to EN ISO 3834-2 as standard. Each is tested to ISO 10100 at working pressure and at 1.5×, and ships with a signed, serialised test report. The İzmir works holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001; factory audits are welcome. Our quotation states materials, welding and testing in writing. See also choosing a hydraulic cylinder manufacturer.

  • Drawing (PDF, DWG or STEP), or photographs and dimensions of a sample
  • Working pressure, required push/pull force or bore and rod diameter, stroke, speed
  • Mounting style, orientation (horizontal/vertical), port type
  • Environment: temperature, fluid, dust, sea air, chemicals
  • Quantity, annual requirement, required delivery date, destination and preferred Incoterm
  • Documents: the pressure test report is standard; state extras such as 3.1 material certificates (EN 10204) or NDT reports

No drawing? The free Drawing Studio produces a dimensioned general-arrangement draft in minutes to attach to the quote form. Standard ISO 6020/6022 cylinders can be specified by ordering code on the hydraulic cylinders page. Payment, delivery and warranty terms are in the terms of sale; cylinders we manufacture carry a 12-month warranty from invoice date. We export to Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom, and our London office handles UK and European accounts.

[04]Delivery and lead time

The other half of the price: time.

[05]Reading the quotation

Six headings in every quotation.

A transparent quotation is one you can compare. Ours is not a single total: its application data sheet sets out the decisions behind the price under six headings.

01
Tube and piston rod
Honed tube bore and wall thickness, rod diameter and chrome plating, material origin; on long strokes, rod diameter by buckling calculation.
02
Mounting and ports
Mounting style, port type and position: all affect labour and material.
03
Seal kit
Brand and compound (NBR, PU, FKM, PTFE), matched to environment and speed; also stated in the ordering code.
04
Options
Cushioning, sensors, special paint and protection are listed separately; remove what you do not need and ask for a revised price.
05
Test and documents
ISO 10100 test and signed, serialised report are standard; material certificates, NDT reports and special test protocols are priced on request.
06
Packing, freight, lead time
ISPM-15 heat-treated crate, rod protection, delivery basis (EXW, FCA, DAP etc., Incoterm agreed per order) and lead time.

Four sound ways to lower the price: keep dimensions close to the standard families (ISO 6020-2 tie-rod, ISO 6022 round-flange), combine quantities in one order, specify options only where needed, and settle the drawing before quotation. Uncertainty is priced as a risk allowance.

[06]Illustrative comparison

Two quotations, same dimensions, different product.

An illustrative case: two quotations for a rear-clevis cylinder, Ø100 mm bore, 800 mm stroke, 200 bar; same dimensions, one noticeably cheaper. Is the tube European honed tube? Is the rod hard-chrome plated, and to how many microns? Whose seal kit? Welded to which standard? Pressure tested before dispatch, with a test report? The cheap quotation leaves most of this unanswered; the dearer one answers each point in writing.

The gap usually comes from testing and material, and each unanswered question is part of it. You can remove any option you do not need from our quotation, but testing and material are not negotiable: they are standard on every cylinder and never cut to lower a price. For quantity price breaks, state quantities in the quote form.

[07]Frequently asked

Price questions.

How much does a custom hydraulic cylinder cost?

A made-to-order cylinder has no list price. Cost depends on bore, stroke, pressure, construction, materials, sealing, options and quantity. Send a drawing or application data for a firm price and lead time within 48 hours.

Which factor affects hydraulic cylinder price most?

Bore and stroke: they fix the material, the machining time and, on long strokes, the rod diameter needed against buckling. Working pressure and construction type come next.

How much does the price fall as quantity rises?

A one-off carries its own design and set-up cost; in a series that cost spreads across the batch and material is planned in bulk. The reduction varies by product, so the quotation shows each quantity break.

Why does a tested hydraulic cylinder cost more than a cheap one?

The cheap one usually saves in four places: no pressure test, uncertified welding, a low-grade seal kit, and tube and rod of unknown origin. The result is early oil leakage, rod scoring and downtime. Every Soydan cylinder is tested to ISO 10100 and ships with a signed, serialised test report.

How quickly does the quotation arrive, and what does it contain?

Within 48 hours, with an application data sheet: cylinder code, main dimensions, materials and seals, price, quantity breaks, lead time and delivery basis (Incoterm agreed per order). Custom cylinders are ready ex-works in under 10 weeks after drawing approval.
